Power over Ethernet (POE)

P ower over Ethernet (PoE) is a technology that allows network cables (like Cat5e or Cat6) to carry both electrical power and data simultaneously over a single cable to devices. It eliminates the need for separate power outlets for IP cameras, VoIP phones, and wireless access points.

Key Aspects of PoE:

How it Works: A PoE switch or injector (Power Sourcing Equipment - PSE) sends power to devices (Powered Devices - PD).

  • Standards: PoE (802.3af): Up to 15.4W per port , PoE+ (802.3at): Up to 30W per port , PoE++ (802.3bt): Up to 100W per port.
  • Benefits: Reduces installation costs, simplifies wiring, and allows for flexible device placement without needing nearby AC outlets.
